Fine Gael tops latest poll as Taoiseach sees jump in satisfaction levels

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore also saw an increase in satisfaction levels though his party received just ten per cent of the first preference vote.

FINE GAEL IS still on top of the polls with the latest one giving them 28 per cent of the first preference vote while Fianna Fáil follows behind with 22 per cent.

In the latest Red C poll conducted on behalf of Paddy Power, Sinn Féin made the strongest gains at the start of this year, picking up three per cent more of the vote to leave the party with 18 per cent overall.

Independent candidates also secured 22 per cent of the first preference vote, now tied with Fianna Fáil. Labour is down two per cent in this poll, with just 10 per cent of the vote.

The poll results show that 30 per cent of women are likely to give Fine Gael a first preference vote compared to 25 per cent of men. The leading party are also most popular in Connacht and Ulster.

As for the public satisfaction with party leaders, Taoiseach Enda Kenny is up from 36 per cent to 43 percent since the last poll in November with Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore also seeing a five percent bump. Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams saw a slight increase while Michael Martin dropped two points.

The poll of 1,004 adults was done by phone between 6 and 8 January.
