Elderly man dies in house fire in rural Clare

The fire is not being treated as suspicious

A MAN IN his 80s has died following a house fire in rural Clare.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the fire at the house at Tonavoher, Knockerra near Kilrush at about 10pm yesterday.

Inspector Paul Slattery of Kilrush Garda Station told Clare FM that that the fire was extensive when they arrived at the scene.

“On arrival with the emergency services we found that the house was well and truly on fire,” Garda Slattery said.

“The fire service gained entry to the house and extinguished the fire and it was then we discovered the body of an individual. He had succumbed to injuries in relation to the fire itself.”

The man’s body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem is to take place.

At present, gardaí are not treating the fire as suspicious.

The results of the post-mortem will determine the nature of the investigation.
