Five arrests in Buncrana arson investigation

A group of young men have been arrested in Donegal in relation to suspected string of arson attacks.

GARDAÍ IN DONEGAL have arrested five men in relation to suspected arson attacks in the Buncrana area.

The men were arrested over the past two days and are all aged between 17 and 24. They were taken to Buncrana and Letterkenny Garda stations.

Four of the men remain in custody but a 17-year-old was released last night.

Gardaí have opened investigations into 11 fires that have occurred in the area since July.

The attacks have targeted unoccupied buildings, farm sheds, vehicles, a primary school and a health centre.

The incidents all occurred under darkness between the hours of 11pm and 4am and have taken place in isolated, rural areas.

One of the arrested was detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939, while the other four were held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
