The incident happened near the town of Pollagh.

Updated 5.20pm

A MAN HAS died after his car entered a flooded river in county Offaly this afternoon.

The tragedy occurred at Turan near the town of Pollagh – which is adjacent to the Grand Canal – shortly after midday.

The 38-year-old victim was found in the vehicle which had struck a bridge and entered the local river.

The man’s car is believed to have been the only vehicle involved in the incident and he was its sole occupant.

He was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem is to be arranged.

The road was closed for a period for forensic examinations but has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact them at Tullamore garda station or the confidential line.

He is the sixth person to die on Irish roads since Christmas Day.
