TWO SHORT IRISH FILM have been nominated in the Short Film (Live Action) category at Oscars 2012: Pentecost and The Shore.

Pentecost won Best Irish Short Film at the Corona Cork Film Festival last year. It was funded by the Irish Film Board and is a light-hearted film about a young altar boy who has to chose between football and serving at Mass. It is a film by Peter McDonald and stars Andrew Bennett, Michael McElhatton and Don Wycherley. McDonald asid that he was very “proud” of the film and his co-workers. He said:

The film I had in my head is the film that I made and I know from my experience as an actor that doesn’t happen unless you have a talent cast and crew to help you achieve this. I hope that the nomination will create new opportunities for all involved. It is great that the film has connected at such a universal level.

Ciarán Hinds and Conleth Hill star in The Shore, in which two boyhood best friends are divided by a misunderstanding during the Northern Irish Troubles. The film follows what happens when they meet up 25 years later.

Belfast-born director Terry George won Best Director and Ciarán Hinds won Best Male Actor for the film at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in August.

An Irish make-up artist, Lynn Johnston, has also been nominated for an Oscar for her work on Albert Nobbs. That movie is an Irish co-production (Parallel Films) and is also up for Oscars in the Best Actress (Glenn Close) and Best Supporting Actress (Janet McTeer) categories.

Johnston said: “I was delighted to get the chance to work again with Matthew Mungle and Martial Corneville (her co-nominees in the Best Make-up category. Both Glenn and Janet were so patient each morning during the application of the make-up and prosthetics and Rodrigo created a lovely atmosphere on set.”

Sadly, Michael Fassbender missed out on a nomination for his leading role in Shame.
