An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has attended the funeral of 24-year-old Garda Ciarán Jones, who lost his life during Monday night’s flash floods.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan have attended the funeral mass of Garda Ciarán Jones this afternoon.

RTÉ reports that about 500 mourners gathered at St Brigid’s Church in Manor Kilbride in Wicklow for the mass at noon.

The young garda has been hailed a hero after he helped motorists in dangerous conditions – while off-duty – during Monday night’s floods.

Last night, President Mary McAleese and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore attended the removal service, along with more than 1,000 mourners.

Tributes have been paid to the 24-year-old, who is survived by his parents and his brother and sister, by the Taoiseach, the Garda Commissioner and the GAA’s president Christy Cooney.
