Funeral of Páidí Ó Sé to take place today

The legendary sportsman will be laid to rest in Ventry today, four days after his unexpected death at home.

THE FUNERAL OF former Kerry football manager and legendary player Páidí Ó Sé is to take place today.

The 57-year-old passed away unexpectedly over the weekend, being found dead at his home in Ventry on Saturday morning. It is suspected he died of a heart attack, the Irish Independent reports.

During his career, he won eight All-Ireland senior championships as a player, and as a manager led the Kingdom to the Sam Maguire cup in 1997 and 2000.

He also spent time managing the Clare and Westmeath senior football teams.

RTÉ reports that Ó Sé will be laid to rest in Ventry today following a requiem mass in the Reilig Chaitliona.

Among those expected to attend the funeral are representatives of President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Tributes poured in for the sporting legend after news of his passing spread.

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin described him as “a giant of the GAA and a gentleman to know”. Sports Minister Jimmy Deenihan said of his former teammate:

Páidí will be remembered not only as one of the greatest footballers of his time and also as a very successful manager guiding Kerry to two All Ireland victories. His talent, commitment and energy were legendary.

Páidí Ó Sé is survived by his wife Maire, and their three children, Neasa, Siún and Padraig Og.
