LIBYAN LEADER MUAMMAR Gaddafi is working on a deal to step down and be allowed safe passage out of the country according to officials with the country’s opposition.
Al Jazeera reports that the opposition council, formed amidst the pro-democracy uprising, has confirmed that Gaddafi has made a conditional offer to step down.
Gaddafi is reported to have sent a representative to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi on Sunday night to discuss a plan for him to step down as part of a deal that would see him offered a safe exit from the country, protection of assets, and immunity from prosecution.
The opposition council, headed by the former justice minister, said that if Gaddafi leaves the country within 72 hours and stops aerial bombing he will not be pursued.
However a government official disputed the claim, saying the reports of such negotiations are “lies”, according to CNN.
The news comes as Libya continues to be engulfed by violence across the country as rebels seek to overthrow Colonel Gaddafi after 41 years of rule.
The UK and France are drafting a resolution to impose a no-fly zone over the country whilst the UN says that up to one million people are in need of aid in the north African country.
