Tony Rice was the drummer in popular band Big Generator.

A WELL-KNOWN MUSICIAN has died following a single-vehicle collision in Co Galway.

Tony Rice was the drummer in popular band Big Generator.

Gardaí at Ballinasloe are investigating the fatal collision which occurred at Coolagh, Gurtymadden today.

The incident happened at about 2.45am on the Loughrea to Killimor Road (N65), about three miles outside Killimor.

The car he was driving hit a concrete barrier.

The 26-year-old was seriously injured and taken to University Hospital Galway. He was later pronounced dead in hospital. No other people were involved.

In a statement, Big Generator said today was “the saddest day” in the band’s history.

We are devastated to have to announce that we lost our musical brother & friend Tony Rice today in a tragic car accident. Tony passed away in intensive care at UCHG surrounded by all of the band, family & friends.

The band’s statement said Tony was “pure, raw talent and truly lived for his drums”.

“We are upset beyond words and all our thoughts are with his family at this time … Our hearts are broken.”

The road was closed to facilitate an examination by garda forensic collision investigators, but has since reopened.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses, in particular anyone who was on that stretch of road between 2.30am and 2.45am, to contact Ballinasloe garda station on 090 9631890, the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
