Galway gorse fires brought under control following overnight evacuations

Fires have burnt in several separate areas around Co Galway, when some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

SEVERAL SEPARATE GORSE fires in Co Galway have been brought under control this morning after raging throughout the night.

A number of fires had broken out in Spiddal and surrounding areas, as well as close to Oranmore.

Fires are continuing in the Spiddal-Moycullen area, and outside Oranmore, but a spokesperson for Galway County Council’s fire service said those fires no longer posed a danger.

Crews had worked through the night to contain the separate isolated fires.

A fire is continuing in the Furbogh area, between Spiddal and Barna, and some units of the fire service remain in place there.

Homes in some parts of the county had been evacuated as a precautionary measure, but the spokesman said any evacuation orders had since been lifted and that no homes were currently being evacuated.

Galway and parts of the west coast have seen sustained dry and cold weather over the last few days, leaving rural areas particularly vulnerable to fires.
