Shatter: Armagh car "probably" used by gang who killed detective

Garda Donohoe will be laid to rest on Wednesday in Lordship, Co Louth.

A BURNT OUT car found in Armagh yesterday is “probably” the one that was used by the gang that killed Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, the Minister for Justice has said.

Minister Alan Shatter made the comment while in Dundalk this afternoon to visit the town’s garda station, RTÉ reports. Minister Shatter’s press spokesperson said that he was in the town to visit gardaí but it was not an official media engagement. However, the Minister spoke to reporters outside the station.

It was confirmed this morning that the car found burnt out in Armagh was being investigated by both the Gardaí and the PSNI.

They said that they were carrying out a technical examination of the car in south Armagh, but did not know yet if it was involved in the crime. More than 100 gardaí are working on the case.

Gardaí have issued a specific appeal for information from anyone who:

  • Observed suspicious activity in the vicinity of Lordship Credit Union between 6.30pm and 9.30pm last Friday, 29 January;
  • Saw a dark coloured car leaving the scene of the shooting that was driving in an erratic manner and heading towards Ravensdale roundabout in the general direction of Dundalk, close to the M1 motorway;
  • Who saw a Volkswagen Passat which was located burned-out on the Keady to Newtownhamilton Road in Co Armagh yesterday morning.

The incident room in Dundalk Garda Station can be contacted on 042 9388400, or alternatively people with information can ring the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any garda station. The PSNI can be contacted on 048 9065 0222 in the Republic of Ireland or 0845 600 8000 from Northern Ireland.
