Garda arrested in Co Galway over alleged sexual assault

The man has been suspended and is being questioned over the incident at Loughrea Garda Station.

OFFICERS WORKING FOR the Garda Ombudsman Commission arrested a member of the gardaí this morning over an alleged sexual assault.

The man is being questioned at Loughrea Garda Station in Co Galway over the incident which is alleged to have happened in the Midlands.

He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and is currently assisting the Garda Ombudsman with its inquiries.

The garda has been suspended by the Garda Commissioner.

This is the first garda arrest made by the Garda Ombudsman  since they were set up five years ago in May 2007.
