Garda Commissioner says Moriarty review will look for criminal offences

Commissioner Martin Callinan said the garda review of 14-year-long tribunal’s findings should be completed “sooner rather than later”.

THE GARDA COMMISSIONER Martin Callinan has pledged that the gardaí are determined to get to the bottom of the implications of the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal, which is already under investigation by CAB.

Callinan has already appointed a team to assess the report, led by CAB chief Det Chief Superintendent Eugene Corcoran, and said that assessment should be completed “sooner rather than later”, the PA reports.

The Garda Commissioner said it was important not to jump to conclusions and the main focus of the garda review is to see if any criminal offences exist, according to the Independent.

The investigation could take up to a month.

Reports emerged at the weekend that gardaí had examined phones – including Justice Moriarty’s personal line – and technical equipment for possible tapping, but gardaí said on Monday that they regularly carry out checks on state offices and buildings and emphasised that there was no ongoing investigation into the Moriarty Tribunal’s phone system.

On Tuesday it emerged that CAB had begun an investigation into the finances and tax status of Independent TD Michael Lowry.

Speaking in the Dáil yesterday evening, Lowry labelled the Tribunal a “scandal of truly epic proportions” and said he would be pursuing his legal options to clear his name of the allegations made in its report.
