Garda hospitalised after being 'dragged along road' at checkpoint

The incident happened just outside Athy.

A GARDA IS recovering today after being injured at a traffic checkpoint last night.

A spokesperson for the force said the incident happened at about 6.30pm at Castlemitchell near Athy, Co Kildare.

The officer was conducting routine checks when it is believed a female motorist that had been pulled over caught his arm in driving off, dragging him along the road.

The garda sustained injuries after hitting the ground and was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment.

He has since been discharged.

Gardaí have appealed for the driver of the car and any witnesses to come forward.
