AN EXAMINATION IS being carried out into garda figures relating to homicide and incidents of domestic violence.
In a submission to the Oireachtas Justice Committee, Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan confirmed that a number of datasets are being checked.
The admission comes following the breath test controversy which revealed that almost one million roadside breath tests that never happened were recorded over a five-year period.
O’Sullivan has now confirmed that examinations of other figures are being carried out by the Garda Internal Audit Unit.
“At the time of writing, An Garda Síochána is reviewing the classification of incidents including domestic violence. While this work is at an early stage, all developments will be reported,” the Commissioner told the committee.
O’Sullivan added that the Policing Authority has been invited to take part in the examination.
The examinations have been started since the recent issues were revealed and O’Sullivan said that, while it is not possible for gardaí to detail every check being carried out, homicide stats are among those being examined.
“A data quality examination in respect of a number of homicide incidents recorded on Pulse is also currently ongoing and is nearing completion,” she said.
