The guards have responded to that 'sexist' tweet

The tweet from the gardaí caused quite a bit of bother online.

AN GARDA SIOCHÁNA have responded to the feedback that their tweet issued last night was sexist.

Many thought the tweet below crossed a line and it caused quite a bit of bother online:

Posting on their Facebook page this evening, the gardaí have explained their reasoning behind the tweet, stating:

If we caused offence never our intention.

The post goes on to say the purpose of the tweet was “to highlight that such crashes can and do happen”.

We say  “ expect the Unexpected” but drivers assume it will happen to others not you. ( Male or Female Drivers).

We highlighted the location as crashes occur here frequently despite this some people tweet about the necessity for such a low speed limit.

So the next time you travel this junction think of the man or woman in the car beside you and slowdown!

The guards maintain the tweet was to prove a point that “the road doesn’t care if you’re male of female, your car doesn’t care, and physics doesn’t care. Fact is it doesn’t matter, the driver walked away from this collision and he was lucky”.

Here are some of the responses to the tweet last night:

The broad majority of social media users who engaged have been questioning the intent of the post — and just why the force was asking people to guess the driver’s gender…

The guards seemed to appreciate all the responses and have even listed many of their favourites on their Facebook page.

… some were interesting and some are provided below in no particular order.

Thanks again for all the feedback. My favourite :

I think that last quiz / tweet was very offensive to the transgender community.

I would guess the vast majority claiming Irish heritage would be “famine” Irish descendents. Those families are big into Erin go Bra and “top of the morning to ya” references. And of course The Quiet Man image of Ireland. Now, because of forces like U2, the web, and newer films about Irish life, the diddle diddle factor is being updated. Kind of a fresh look at I.

One of the Dublins has nothing to do with Ireland and was named because of two Inns in the town as in Double Inn.

Irish people living abroad have much more pride, respect and appreciation for their language, culture and history.
Irish Americans have more pride than we do.
