Gardaí make further arrest in Smithfield horse fair probe

The arrests brings to four the total number of people held in connection with the incident at the horse fair in March in which three men were injured after shots were fired and a stampede ensued.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a 21-year-old man in relation to the firearm incident at Smithfield horse fair in March that left two people injured after shots were fired whilst another received serious wounds from a slash hook.

Gardaí say that the man is being held at Bridewell garda station in Dublin under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, bringing to four the total number of people arrested in relation to the incident on Sunday 6 March.

The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) said at the time it was a “miracle” no one was killed in the incident as scenes of mayhem unfolded in Smithfield plaza when shots were fired and terrified people and frightened horses ran from the area.

There are have been widespread calls for the fair to be shut down with enterprise minister Richard Bruton taking legal advice on the matter but the attorney general has advised that this may not be legal.

The horse fair takes place on the first Sunday of ever month and attracts thousands of people.
