The government has offered a pay deal to a Garda union

It ends three months of negotiation and, if approved by members, would avert a possible strike.

THE DEPARTMENT OF Justice has confirmed it has extended a pay deal to gardaí.

The deal was reached with members of the Garda Representative Authority (GRA) late on Friday.

It ends three months of negotiation and, if approved by members, would avert a possible strike.

The GRA had rejected the Lansdowne Road Agreement and withdrawn from the Department’s “transformation agenda” after increments were frozen.

The deal will see those increments restored, as well as a rent allowance being returned to new recruits, the Department said in a statement.

“The department can confirm that agreement was reached with the GRA on Friday which if approved by its members will bring the GRA within the terms of the Lansdowne Road Agreement.

“As part of the agreement the rent allowance of over €4,000 will be restored for recent recruits and for anyone considering joining An Garda Síochána in the current recruitment campaign.”

The document is now expected to be brought to the GRA executive committee who will decide whether to bring the document to members. The union had balloted on strike action, the result of which is due on Tuesday.
