Gardaí 'want Garda Reserve abolished'

Vote taken on the future of the Garda Reserve at the annual garda conference in Co Mayo today.

MEMBERS OF THE gardaí have voted unanimously at the garda annual conference to seek the abolition of the Garda Reserve.

RTE reports that at the conference in Mayo, some gardaí said full-time members of the force have been ‘babysitting’ part-time garda reservists.

They said that these recruits had to be ‘mollycoddled’ by ‘real’ gardaí.

The Garda Reserve costs €3 million per year.

A  motion was also passed by gardaí at the conference stating that garda drivers should not undertake any more high-speed pursuits until the regulations are changed.

This comes after some gardaí involved in such pursuits found themselves under investigation by the Ombudsman Commission and before the courts.

Earlier today, delegates at the conference expressed their concern about the cost of policing the upcoming visits of Queen Elizabeth II and President Barack Obama.
