"Gentleman", "statesman" and "servant" all trending - Twitter tributes to Garret FitzGerald

Twitter users join politicians in remembering Garret Fitzgerald, the seventh Taoiseach of Ireland, who passed away in hospital last night.

AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER of tweets paying tribute to the former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald are flooding in after he passed away last night following a short illness.

Touching memories as well as nods to his service to Ireland have led to “gentleman”, “statesman” and “servant” all trending on Twitter in Ireland.

Earlier Enda Kenny, President Mary Mc Aleese, John Bruton and Micheál Martin were among those who offered their condolences, while former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds echoed regrets that Dr. FitzGerald had not been well enough to be present at the state dinner held in honour of the Queen at Dublin Castle last night.

This morning on Twitter RTE presented Ryan Tubridy has called FitzGerald a “fine servant of the state”, while Today FM’s Matt Cooper has called him a “wonderfully intentioned public servant” with “massive integrity” who was “good fun” and “very jolly”.

Fine Gael TD Paschal Donohoe says that FitzGerald was “a model of how to conduct a public and private life”.
