THE PSNI HAVE warned Gerry Adams of a credible threat to his life after his release from police custody yesterday.
Sinn Féin have confirmed that officers visited the home of the Sinn Féin leader and informed his wife Collette of the threat from criminal elements.
The chairperson of the Cúige Uladh branch of the party Bobby Storey has also been informed of a similar threat.
The confirmation came this afternoon from Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Raymond McCartney:
I can confirm that the PSNI visited the homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey last night to warn them of a credible threat against their lives. The PSNI officer told Gerry Adams’ wife Collette that they had information of a ‘serious threat from criminals’ to Gerry Adams who was not at home at the time.
“Clearly there are elements that are opposed to the peace process and are anti-Sinn Féin. We will not allow them to succeed nor will we be deflected from our determination to build the peace process,” added McCartney.
Adams is intending to return to the Dáil to work this week and will tomorrow evening attend an election rally in Dublin’s Alexander Hotel.
Michael McConville
The son of the murdered Jean McConville this morning also said that Gerry Adams warned him of a ‘backlash’ if he releases the names of those who he believes were involved in his mother’s capture and murder.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4′s Today programme, Michael McConville said:
Gerry Adams says to me, ‘Michael you’re getting a lot of support from Republican people. If you release the names, he says, I hope you’re ready for the backlash’.
McConville was asked how he took Adams’ word to which he responded, “I took it as a threat”.
He acknowledged that the ‘backlash’ to which Adams referred to may have been related to a ‘backlash’ against the Peace Process but says that he felt Adams was referring to backlash from republican people.
During his press conference in Belfast last evening after his release from custody, Adams opened his remarks in Irish by referring to the ‘tragedy for the McConville family’, adding that it is his party’s desire that SF’s desire to secure justice in that case.
