A TEENAGE BOY is facing trial accused of stabbing another youth over comments made on Facebook about his girlfriend.

The 16-year-old boy appeared at the Dublin Children’s Court charged with assault causing harm to the youth, producing a blade during the incident and theft of the alleged victim’s bicycle all of which is alleged to have occurred on on a date last year.

He faces a preliminary hearing to determine if his trial would take place in the juvenile court or instead should go forward to the circuit court which has tougher sentencing powers.

In an outline of the allegations, Judge Timothy Lucey heard that comments were allegedly made about the defendant’s girlfriend.

It was alleged the teenage defendant later encountered the youth, who is of similar age, on a south Dublin street and there was a row. The court heard it began as a fist fight but it was alleged the accused produced a knife and stabbed the second youth in his torso.

The court heard he suffered serious injuries and medical reports were furnished to the judge who also heard that the victim still needed to go back to hospital for further treatment as recently as August.

It was also alleged that after the stabbing the defendant left the scene on the injured youth’s bike.

Judge Lucey held that the case was too serious to be dealt with in the juvenile court.

The teenager, who was accompanied to court by his mother and his barrister, has not yet entered a plea to the charge. He was remanded on continuing bail pending the preparation of a book of evidence.
