Goal has evacuated staff from South Sudan

The charity says it is worried about the violence in the country.

IRISH AID CHARITY Goal has confirmed that it withdrew its staff from South Sudan this week.

The Charity says that it evacuated 25 international staff from the country, which is rapidly descending into civil war, on 18, 22 and 23 December.

National staff will continue to run 34 primary health clinics and deliver other programmes in the country.

Goal CEO Barry Andrews says that they are concern on the impact the violence is having on the 475,000 people who they help in South Sudan.

“The evacuated members of GOAL’s South Sudan management and technical team have established an office in Nairobi, from where they are liaising with their South Sudanese colleagues.

However, this can only work in the short-term. There can be no doubt that if the violence continues it will prolong the absence of GOAL’s staff and severely restrict the movement of supplies and local personnel.

He said that staff are anxious to return to the country.
