Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender and Room lead the most Irish Golden Globes ever

Ricky Gervais will host the ceremony in January.

SAOIRSE RONAN AND Michael Fassbender are leading the Irish march for this year’s Golden Globes.

Both have been nominated in the acting categories: Ronan for her work in Brooklyn and Fassbender for his performance in Steve Jobs. (Worth noting that Dennis Quaid pronounced Saoirse as “Shee-sha”.)

Irish actress Caitriona Balfe also garnered a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for her role in Outlander.

Elsewhere, Irish writer Emma Donoghue was nominated for Best Screenplay for Room, an adaptation of her novel of the same name.

Room, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, also picked up nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for its star Brie Larson.

Brooklyn missed out on a nomination for Best Motion Picture (Drama) although many Oscar pundits are still predicting that the Irish film will find a place on the Oscar list in January.

Carol led the way with five nominations, with The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs all landing four nominations apiece. (A full list of nominees can be found here.)

Fassbender will face off against Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston in his category, while Saoirse Ronan is up against Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander.

The Golden Globes take place on January 10th and the ceremony will be hosted by the always controversial Ricky Gervais.
