Squatters have another week in the derelict Grangegorman complex

The group occupying the site say they have come to a loose agreement with receivers to let them stay another week while they try to come up with a solution.

SQUATTERS WHO HAVE been occupying a derelict complex in Grangegorman, Dublin, say they have another week to stay on site as they negotiate with receivers who have attempted to take possession of the complex.

The squatters have turned the buildings and vacant space on the site into a home and community space with a vegetable and herb garden and entertainment venues. They are refusing to leave until an alternative venue is offered to replace what they say has become a vital service in the community.

Back in March, after scuffles between security workers acting on behalf of receivers and the squatters, the High Court ordered those living at the buildings to leave the properties by midnight last night.

However, the group are still occupying the premises this evening and have come to a loose agreement with the receivers to keep discussions going for another week while they remain at the complex.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie this evening, spokesperson for the group Gréum Ná hEaradh said the project has been “adding intrinsic value to the area” and they want to be able to maintain that. He pointed out that there is no indication what will become of the space or guarantees that it will not be left vacant again for years.

It is hoped that, if the group is forced to leave, another derelict site in the area can be offered up for them to create a similar community space.
