WASTE COMPANY GREYHOUND Recycling has rejected an allegation that they have picked relief staff from casual labourers in a car park.
Staff at the company will strike from Friday because of a proposed pay cut and cuts to other allowances.
They had previously taken an unofficial action against the company.
Speaking today during Leaders’ Questions, Independent TD Clare Daly said that workers are being asked to take a 35% cut in wages.
She added that routes are being extended and when the full-time staff go home, casual labour is being procured from a hardware store car park.
Daly said that this was done “like a scene from On The Waterfront”.
She said that the selection of the staff meant that unqualified people were collecting rubbish around Dublin and had been involved in at least one accident involving bin trucks.
She asked the Taoiseach to intervene in the situation, which is “more suited to an episode of The Sopranos” and called for an investigation into Greyhound.
Response
The company strongly rejected the claims made by Daly. A spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that the staff are all fully trained and able.
“We reject out of hand the notion that the staff are picked out of a hat.”
“Greyhound Household has exhausted all industrial relations avenues to address historical terms and conditions of our household collection crews to bring them back in line with current industry norms in order to remain competitive in today’s marketplace.”
