"Remarkably stupid" Irishman gets stuck in air vent sneaking into Australian nightclub

Hugh McMahon had reportedly been thrown out twice already.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD Irishman is facing fines totalling €1,800 after becoming stuck in an air vent trying to sneak into an Australian nightclub.

Hugh McMahon was twice thrown out of the popular Sin City nightclub in Surfers Paradise but was determined to get back in according to 9 News.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that, in the process of climbing into the cavity, he damaged sections of roofing plaster board and became wedged among wiring, pipes and other internal struts.

Police were called to the scene at about 1.30am local-time yesterday when people heard screaming coming from the air vent in the roof of the club.

A crowd gathered and police and rescue services spent two hours on the delicate task of freeing the teenager without injury.

McMahon is believed to be working in Australia on a year-long working visa and appeared before a Queensland court charged with trespass and wilful damage.

He plead guilty to the charges with the judge describing his actions as “remarkably stupid”.

“Drunk or sober, it was an absolutely remarkably stupid thing to have done,” the judge is reported to have said.

McMahon was ordered to pay a fine of AUD$900 and AUD$1,700 compensation to the club.
