CONTROVERSIAL LOYALIST politician Rev Ian Paisley retired as a minister last night, ending more than 60 years as a preacher at his church.

Some 3,000 people attended the farewell event at the Martyrs Memorial church in Belfast last night, the BBC reports.

Paisley became famous as a firebrand preacher and loyalist community figurehead. He led the Democratic Unionist Party for years before entering a historic power-sharing government with Sinn Féin.

He retired from elected politics last year. Here are some highlights – and not-so-highlights – from his decades-long career:
