Have the Greens started campaigning already?

National ad mentioning John Gormley’s proposal for Wicklow Mountains could be seen as early campaign effort for next general election.

A RADIO AD FROM THE Department of the Environment which aired on national radio this morning called attention to an initiative proposed by Minister John Gormley.

The ad says that Gormley proposes designating the Wicklow Mountains a Special Protection Area in accordance with EU directives.

Funded by the taxpayer through the Department of the Environment, the ad says that people directly affected by the proposal have been notified in person.

A spokesperson for the department told TheJournal.ie that the proposal is part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and it required an ad to inform the public because there are a range of public rights of way through the area.

A Green Party press spokesperson said that the ad was not organised by the party.

Gormley has indicated that the Green Party wants an election to be called in January, which Senator Dan Boyle clarified was a signal that the party wants the Dáil dissolved by then, rather than having the election in January. It is now expected to take place in March.
