HSE apologises over deaths of mother and newborn

Garda Tania McCabe and her infant son died shortly after his birth at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, in March 2007.

THE HSE HAS APOLOGISED to the family of a garda sergeant who died after giving birth to twin boys three months prematurely at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, in March 2007.

RTÉ reports that Tania McCabe, 34, suffering a major haemorrhage and died hours after the babies were born.

One of the boys was suffering severe congenital abnormalities and died shortly after his birth.

McCabe had been admitted to hospital on 6 March after her waters broke. She was given antibiotics and discharged the following day, but returned to hospital in labour the day after.

The HSE admitted negligence and the Hich Court approved a settlement of over €200,000 for McCabe’s 6- and 4-year-old sons.
