A lot more people want Micheál Martin to be our next Taoiseach than they do Enda Kenny

Rather worryingly, some of those polled would like Kanye West to be Taoiseach. Come on people, he’s not even Irish…

THE MAJORITY OF Irish adults want Fianna Fáil leader Michéal Martin to be the next Taoiseach according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by Ignite Research, suggests that 20.4%, or one in five, of those polled would like Micheál Martin to be the next Irish leader.

14% (one in seven) of those asked would like to see Enda Kenny remain as Taoiseach, with 9.6% plumping for Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams.

The lower level of support for Kenny than Martin is perhaps attributable to a spread of likely candidates from within the Fine Gael ranks – 4.7% went for Leo Varadkar and 1.4% picked agriculture minister Simon Coveney.

Those three Fine Gael representatives combined still come up slightly shy of Micheál Martin’s total – 20.1% versus 20.4%.

The poll was conducted using 1,000 Irish adults as subjects between 2 and 4 March, one week since the country went to the polls in the general election.

Naturally, given those polled were given free rein in their choice of our next Taoiseach, some slightly left-field candidates made it into the running, including Dustin the Turkey, Bosco, and Kanye West.

Kanye might have a slightly bloody-minded approach to water charges you fear.

Top of the non-electables were Conor McGregor (who someone did actually attempt to vote for in the election) with 1.1%, and perhaps unsurprisingly, me (that is you) with 1.8%.

Well, everyone does think they know the best way to run the country after all.
