In pictures: Libya announces that Gaddafi is dead

Celebrations have been seen on the streets of Libya as the interim government confirms that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has been killed.

COLONEL MUAMMAR GADDAFI has been killed in Libya, the country’s interim government has confirmed.

A National Transitional Council spokesman announced the death of the strongman at a press conference earlier today.

TheJournal.ie is providing rolling updates as the story emerges from Sirte, where it is claimed tht NTC forces killed the former leader.

There have been celebratory scenes across Libya – and indeed the world – since the reports started this afternoon. Across the North African country, civilians have been tooting car and ship horns, while fighters have been firing gunshots into the air – a practice we have already found out is mightily dangerous.
