On the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, we take a look back at some of the most poignant images of that day.

IMAGES OF THE 11 September attacks on the United States include some of the most iconic and poignant on the planet.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks that day, which were perpetrated by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists who hijacked four planes and steered them towards targets in various parts of the country.

Two planes were crashed into the World Trade Centre towers in New York city, a third was flown into the Pentagon in Virginia, while the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania – never reaching its target in Washington DC.
