Independent review recommends Mater site for new Children's Hospital

An independent review group has recommended that the site near the Mater Hospital in Dublin be used to build the country’s proposed National Children’s Hospital.

THE SITE NEAR the Mater Hospital in Dublin has been selected as the most ideal location for the country’s new Children’s Hospital by an independent review group.

The independent panel – made up of experts from the US, Australia and the UK – was appointed by the Minister for Health, James Reilly. Clinical and financial analyses of the proposals were carried out and the panel subsequently endorsed the Mater Hospital site – however it was recommended that the height of the building be reduced from the originally proposed 16 storeys, RTÉ reports.

The panel’s recommendations will now be forwarded to the Cabinet, and Reilly is expected to make an announcement on the matter on Wednesday, BreakingNews.ie reports.

Planning permission for the multi-million euro project has not yet been granted, despite some €30 million being spent on it to date.
