An Air Corps maritime patrol aircraft was called 100 miles off Cork to tend to an injured fisherman on board a Spanish vessel.

A FISHERMAN was evacuated from a Spanish fishing vessel around 100 miles off the cost of Co Cork earlier today to be given medical treatment.

An Air Corps maritime patrol craft was called to provide cover for the evacuation of an injured fisherman from a Spanish fishing vessel around 100 miles off Irish waters this morning.

The CASA search-and-rescue aircraft was diverted from its daily patrol on request by the coast guard, who required assistance for the winching operation to remove the injured fisherman.

The craft provided a communications relay between the fishing vessel and the coast guard’s Rescue 115 helicopter, which brought the injured fisherman to Cork for medical attention.

The Air Corps craft returned to patrol duties before returning to its station at Baldonnell.
