Thousands of teachers protest outside Leinster House over cuts and equal pay in October. Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

Primary teachers votes for strike action if government cuts their pay

The INTO also agreed to accept an invitation to go back to the talks table with the Labour Relations Commission.

NINE IN 10 primary teachers have backed a call for industrial action, including strike action, if the government decides to make cuts to their pay.

The ballots were held over the past four nights in every county in Ireland.

“Primary teachers have not taken this action lightly,” added Sheila Nunan, general secretary of the INTO. “If the government chooses not to listen to the voices of its workers, then there is no option for primary teachers but strike action.”

Back to the talks table

The INTO executive also agreed to accept an invitation to talks from the Labour Relations Commission.

The original LRC proposals were rejected by 70 per cent of the union’s 32,000 membership last month, a decision that led to the ballot for industrial action.

Nunan said action would be inevitable unless government negotiated an alternative to the LRC proposals that were rejected by teachers and other public servants.
