Iran releases 11 students arrested over British embassy attack

There has been no immediate explanation for the students’ release – under Iranian law, damaging property carries a prison term of up to three years.

IRAN HAS RELEASED 11 hardline students detained for storming the British Embassy and diplomatic compounds in Tehran this week.

The semi-official Fars news agency says police released the students late Wednesday, a day after they were arrested for storming and ransacking the embassy and British diplomatic compounds.

The mobs’ rampage went on for hours, prompting Britain to pull its diplomats out of the country, shutter the embassy in Tehran and order all Iranian diplomats out of the UK within 48 hours.

There was no immediate explanation for the students’ release. Under Iranian law, damaging property carries a prison term of up to three years.

The incident has deepened Iran’s isolation and significantly escalated tensions with the West.
