Thousands of certificates allowing doctors to work overseas granted

It follows fears of a manpower shortage in the health sector.

OVER 3000 COMPETENCE certificates have been issued to Irish doctors over the past 19 months.

The Medical Independent reports that these are required in order practice overseas.

It is not yet clear how many have emigrated.

It follows warnings that the sector is facing an imminent manpower shortage, with the majority of interns expressing their intention to emigrate once fully trained.

The Irish Medical Council made over €108,000 from issuing these certificates, James Fogarty writes.
