TRAVEL DISRUPTION LOOMS for August after Siptu workers at Irish Rail balloted for strike action.
The union confirmed this afternoon will begin a work-to-rule on 24 August.
This will be followed by a one-day work stoppage on 25 August.
Thousands of commuters could be affected.
However, this action is subject to Irish Rail implementing planned pay cuts.
The proposed cuts at Irish Rail would be temporary and last for 25 months.
Irish Rail has previously warned that the failure to implement cost-saving measures will result in redundancies and the closure of some lines.
Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar said earlier this year that strike action was “the last thing anyone wants to see”.
The company had previously indicated that the pay cuts are due to go ahead.
