IRISH RAIL AND the unions representing its workers have said they will attend talks at the Labour Relations Commission tomorrow.
Both parties to the dispute are looking for a solution ahead of planned train stoppages on 7, 8 and 21 September.
The strikes will impact those going to the All-Ireland Hurling Final on Sunday 7 September, and spectators for the All-Ireland Football Final which takes place on the 21st of the month.
The talks will begin tomorrow between Irish Rail management and the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) and Siptu.
NBRU general secretary Dermot O’Leary said the invitation is designed to “establish if there is a basis for further discussions around a more comprehensive agenda rather than one which has a disproportionate focus on our members wages”.
He says his union will engage with the LRC “on this basis”.
Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has welcomed the development.
“I welcome the fact that the LRC has intervened at this time and that the invitations to talks have been accepted by the parties to the Irish Rail dispute,” he said in a statement.
“As I have maintained, the LRC is the appropriate forum in which discussions can, and should, take place, and am hopeful of positive outcome.”
