Irish teens invent a cheaper and better way to light the streets

Three Cork students have won an international science competition with a design for an LED bulb that can be screwed into standard street lamp fittings.

THREE IRISH STUDENTS have designed an LED bulb that can be screwed into standard street lamp fittings.

Their project will allow street lamps to use longer-lasting, more energy efficient LED bulbs without any modification.

Ellen Fitzgerald, Aoife Dolan and Niamh Nyhan from Sacred Heart Secondary School in Clonakilty, Cork, estimate that there are some 400,000 street lights in Ireland costing an average of €40 million a year.

Their design, which could see streets being lit for lower costs, took first place at the International Environment and Sustainability Project Olympiad (INESPO).

The three students saw off competition from 47 other countries to win the international competition, which took place in Amsterdam from 31 May to 5 June.

“Their LED lightbulb is such a clever idea, and highlights how their generation is already thinking about ways of becoming more energy efficient,” Aoife Cannon from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland said. ”I am sure that they will help to positively shape Ireland’s sustainable energy future.”
