Irish tourist found dead in swimming pool of Portugal resort

The man had been staying at the resort with a group of family and friends.

THE BODY OF an Irishman was discovered at the bottom of a swimming pool at a resort in Portugal yesterday.

Local media reports the 29-year-old man had been staying in the Pine Sun Park resort in Praia da Falésia, Albufeira with a group of family and friends. According to the reports he had been drinking and went to take a shower.

His body was later discovered in the pool, at around 5am local time.

Emergency services were called and he had been pulled out of the water by a friend and resort security by the time they arrived but he was not breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is due to take place.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is offering consular assistance to the family of an Irish citizen who died in Portugal.
