Irish website to hold presidential election vote for expats

Ballotbox.ie is opening up registration for a mock poll to allow Irish abroad to have their say in who they want to be the next president.

THE ORGANISATION WHICH allowed 5,000 to have their say in the general election last February is holding another online poll for the upcoming general election.

Ballotbox.ie has opened up registration today, allowing Irish emigrants to have their say in who they want to be the next president of Ireland in a mock election.

The website was founded by Brian Reynolds who is aiming to highlight the disenfranchisement felt by many Irish people who no longer live in the country and are not allowed to have their say in elections.

Earlier this year, 5,000 Irish people had their say in the general election.

In a statement the organisation lamented the lack of progress in allowing Irish people to have a real say in who is in power: “Unlike so many other countries Ireland does not offer its citizens the right to vote if they reside outside of the 26 counties.

“With so much talk of the need to harness the global Irish community to help Ireland get back on it’s feet, it seems the powers that be are failing to grasp the importance of keeping recent emigrants involved in the national conversation,” the statement added.
