Israel has lost more soldiers during this Palestinian conflict than in the last ten years

For the first time in years, the deaths of Israeli soldiers outweighs the death of civilians.

Israel Graph

AS OF THURSDAY, 59 Israelis had died during Operation Protective Edge, the Israeli incursion into the Gaza Strip.

Three of those were civilians killed by Hamas rockets fired from the 40km by 12km Strip. The overwhelming majority, 56, were members of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). Six more soldiers were added to that body count yesterday.

The graph, put together using official IDF figures and contemporaneous reports, does not include IDF members killed by Lebanese forces or in Golan Heights. It is purely focused on Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.

In 2012, the IDF lost just soldiers, in the midst of intense fighting that left 55 Hamas militants and at least 100 Palestinian civilians dead.

This time, both sides have seen the body count ratcheted up exponentially.

On the Palestinian side, 55 militants has become 181 and 100 civilians at least 850.
