THE RAINFALL that left many parts of Dublin and the east coast flooded yesterday has officially been declared a record by Met Éireann.
Data from the agency shows that 82mm of rain – around three-and-a-quarter inches – of rainfall was recorded at Casement Aerodrome at Baldonnell in south Dublin yesterday – the highest amount ever recorded for any date in October.
Met Éireann said that almost four-fifths of that amount – some 65.7mm, over 2.5 inches – had fallen within six hours, between 2pm and 8pm yesterday. 23mm of that, just under an inch, fell in an hour between 4pm and 5pm.
Rainfall at Dublin Airport on the northside of the city was some 69.1mm, while a station at Phoenix Park recorded 71.3mm of rainfall – including 48.2mm in a four-hour window.
The level of rainfall over the course of a day would only occur once every two decades, Met Éireann said, while the rainfall at Baldonnell between 2pm and 8pm was of a level that would only be achieved once every 80 years.
The record rainfall for any single calendar day in the capital’s history was in 1963, when over 180mm – seven inches – of rain was recorded in Mount Merrion in Dublin.
The worst rain ever recorded by Met Éireann in a single day was on September 18, 1993, at Cloone Lake in Co Kerry – where 243.5mm, or over 9.5 inches, of rainfall was recorded.
