Kia Niro plug-in hybrid launches in Ireland - and with a competitive price tag too

New Niro PHEV undercuts Toyota Prius PHEV.

THE NEW KIA Niro PHEV is the plug-in version of the original Niro hybrid, Kia’s five-seat crossover.

Prices for the plug-in Niro start at €35,995, which includes €2,500 VRT reduction. This prices undercuts that of the Niro’s most significant rival, the Toyota Prius PHEV. There’s also a further €5,000 reduction available as the Niro PHEV also qualifies for the SEAI grant for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The Niro PHEV is available in just one trim level and comes with 16-inch alloys, leather upholstery with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, dual air-conditioning and a reversing camera. There is also a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system which includes sat nav with TomTom services and Bluetooth, AppleCar Play and Android Auto compatibility.

The Niro PHEV is also equipped with smart cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver attention warning. It achieved a full five-stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

The Niro Plug-in Hybrid pairs a 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine with a 8.9kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and has a beefier 44.5kW electric motor compared to the standard Niro’s 32kW version.

The plug-in Niro boosts impressively low CO2 emissions of 29g/km (combined New European Driving Cycle) – and the car offers a zero-emissions, pure-electric driving range of 58km.

Rather rarely in plug-in hybrids, the Niro PHEV comes with a six-speed double-clutch transmission which allows drivers to shift gear for themselves, if they so choose. Also unusual amongst plug-in hybrids, the Niro PHEV can be had with an optional Towing Pack allowing owners to tow braked loads of up to 1,300kg.
