Emergency council meeting to be held over controversial Kilkenny ring road plan

Local TD John McGuinness says that a review of the situation is needed.

KILKENNY COUNTY COUNCIL will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss the ongoing row over the city’s ring road extension.

Groups against the proposed central access scheme yesterday addressed the council’s monthly meeting, describing the plan as “horrific”.

Locals have been protesting against the plans for the central access scheme, claiming it will bring more traffic to the centre of the medieval city.

They have been calling for the funding to be used to finish a ring road.

Protesters have been stationed outside the gates every day for the past few weeks and have prevented construction vehicles from entering the site. Last week, gardaí cordoned off the streets in the city to facilitate machinery entering the site.

Local TD John McGuinness said that he believes a review of the scheme is needed.

“We just had a local election and serious concern was raised about the central access scheme.

“We were told that a review was not possible because contracts were signed.

“But I believe that a review should take place, because we need to know how communities in the area affected will be impacted.”
