LAMBORGHINI IS LAUNCHING its first SUV model since the military-inspired LM002. It’s called the Urus, and the company is referring to it as a Super SUV on account of the 650hp outputted by the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that lurks under its bonnet.
Its styling is, unsurprisingly, dividing opinion. From the elaborate front-end to the rear door handle appearing like an afterthought in the rear wheel arch, the Urus retains a coupé-like silhouette while being capable of transporting its five occupants at impressive speeds.
It should be practical too, with a 616-litre boot and ISOFIX points. The Urus also features adjustable air suspension that can raise or lower the car’s ride height according to the needs of the driver. High-speed runs see it hug the road while off-road modes raise it to improve ground clearance.
Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, using a 40:60 front/rear bias, but it can send up to 87 percent of torque to the rear wheels.
Wondering how it handles? It shares much of its underpinnings with the Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, both family members of the Volkswagen Group, so expect to be impressed.
While the Urus might not win over many of the Lamborghini purists, the company does expect it to double sales to around 7,000 units per year.
It seems that the world just can’t get enough of SUVs, and the Urus is likely to be the first of a new generation of ultra-high-performance models. It is already understood that rival Italian supercar maker Ferrari is also working on an SUV model.
