FORMER HURLER OF the year Lar Corbett has sensationally withdrawn from the Tipperary senior hurling panel.

A county spokesperson confirmed tonight that the Thurles Sarsfields forward has told Premier manager Declan Ryan that he will not be available for the 2012 season.
Tipperary backroom chiefs have said they will keep ‘the door open’ for the player.
An official statement released by the county officials on Monday night read: ”The Tipperary Senior Hurling Management regrets that Lar Corbett has informed us of his withdrawal from the Tipperary Senior Hurling panel due to work and business commitments.
“Lar’s importance and value to the Tipperary Senior Hurling team is immeasurable and the door will remain open to him for a return to the panel if those work pressures ease.”
Corbett won three All-Ireland medals and three All Star awards during his career with Tipp.
Huge loss for Tipp, one of our stars of the last 3-4 years. He owes us nothing, but still devastated that he is gone, hopefully it might like DJ retiring once and then coming back. Can’t be easy juggling a business and hurling commitments in current environment. Best of luck to him…but hope to see him back in the blue and gold!
There must be a ‘real’ reason for this. Doubt we will ever find out in a public way but it will emerge in private.
A clash. But who with, that is the question.
Or perhaps it is what he says it is, is it really that hard to swallow that a player may have bigger commitments in his life than keeping up appearances on the field? I’m not surprised that people automatically jump on the ‘infighting’ bandwagon in cases like this. The more room created for infighting and back’handedness the better, it would seem.
Most county players have levels of fitness that are the same as premiership soccer players. In tough economic times, when your business might need more focus it is hard to keep that focus, a level that should demand professionalism.
Minor all Ireland champs in football this year burnt toast!! Do feel free to state your own county there!! Best of luck to Lar in his future, what a legend, great hurler, shame to see him retire so early, gave us Tipp fans many great Sundays out!!
Ah here now. No shame in being beaten by the footballing giants who are … Roscommon. Anyway, back to the real national sport and Lar, he’ll be sorely missed but GAA doesn’t pay many bills and it’s hard to keep a business going these times, even more so if you’re an athlete and your business requires you to keep unsocial hours. Hope he reconsiders, or circumstances allow him to get back onthe field. Best of luck to him.
I didn’t say there were none, just that Tipp wasn’t the greatest contributor to the true footballing game of rugby. Probably better contributors than Waterford though to be fair.
What, has he given up club hurling? Doubt it. This is the way it works in GAA and the way we like it. No Pay. I’m sad to see him go, hoping it’s not irreversible. On the bright side, there’s some young future Tipp’ star out there looking for his turn to join the panel and now it’s come. Things move on. C’est la vie.
Fantastic hurler, intercounty hurling takes an awful amount of time, he owes Tipp hurling nothing and he bows out at the top, good luck in the future sir. Glad I got to see you play, welcome in Cork anytime but championship time!
Tipp’s loss is the other counties gain. Can’t imagine you have much time for loved ones AND business AND training commitments . Something had to give. Just a shame it had to be GAA. Best of luck Lar
Best of luck to him . We have not seen the last of the man. Some talented man… On a slightly controversial note, could his success as a publican be founded on his talent and status as a Senior Tipp Hurler?
Interesting point James ie is his pub success contingent on him being a Tipp hurling success? Plenty of other GAA stars have had both successful and failing pub enterprises….
I note that his statement referred to ‘work AND business commitments’….. the business is the pub, but is work his trade, as an electirican? If he is juggling both, then it is obviously doubly tough on him. Like so many these days, you do what you have to do to keep the head above water.
Two Thurles natives on the 6 o clock news say that there is something going on and the tv report suggests that something in the set up has changed.
Lar is a gent who wont come out directly blaming someone BUT the rest of us have our suspicions and Its over to the Man who carries the can, Declan, to do whats necessary to sort this out.
Declan will shoulder the blame but it should be on his own terms, being responsible for his own mistales and not somebody elses. Others could have had the job but didnt want it BUT wanted to run the show without the burden of the ‘CAN’.
Don't forget! The clocks go forward by an hour tonight
