Best of luck: Over 50,000 students set to receive their Leaving Cert results today

The results will be handed out at schools and available online from 12 noon today.

AFTER A LONG summer, the wait is finally over.

Exactly 58,466 students across the country are set to receive their Leaving Certificate results today, when the results will be handed out from 9am onwards and available online from 12 noon.

Students will be eager to find out if they got the points necessary to gain entry to their preferred college course, or go straight into employment off the basis of their results.

Minister for Education Richard Bruton has congratulated students on their results, saying “many new opportunities have opened up for young people”.

This is an important milestone and can be a time of great celebration and indeed relief for students and their families as the results become available.

There are other options available to students if they don’t get the results they wanted.

You can request to view your marked scripts for no cost, and marking schemes are available online. If you feel like you were marked unfairly, then you can have your paper reviewed, which costs €40 per paper, which can be reallocated to you if your grade is improved.

From 10am today, the Department of Education’s helpline will be taking calls from students worried about their exam results. The helpline is manned by guidance counsellors and last year received 2,500 calls – a record-high number.

The freephone number is:

1800 265 165

Students who have a lot of questions should also read the Candidate Information Booklet where information is given about how your results are given, requesting a review of your results, and other relevant information.

How it’s adding up

0.9% - the overall increase of students sitting the Leaving Certificate, compared to an increase of 1.6% last year.

5% - the approximate drop in number of students partaking in Leaving Cert Applied programme, where students are assessed based on projects as well as tests over two years.

1,870 - the number of Leaving Cert Vocational students who received a merit, up by 250 students from last year. (The Leaving Cert vocational programme is a two-year experience based programme, where candidates study the standard Leaving Cert subjects, but with extra work in the form of work experience, activities and a greater emphasis on technology use.)

717 - the number of people studying Polish, the most popular non-curricular EU language, with Lithuanian and Romanian the second and third most popular respectively.

1,445 - the number of repeat candidates this year, down from 1,670 in 2015.

Best of luck to everyone getting their results today from all of us at TheJournal.ie. You’ll be great.
